Ductless heat pumps are taking the heating and cooling industry by storm due to their high efficiency ratings, flexible installation capabilities, quiet operation and rebate programs that almost cover the cost of the equipment. These systems work by using INVERTER compressors that vary the capacity of heating and cooling delivered to a space based on the demand at any given time. This process of variable-capacity output allows for more precise temperature control throughout the entire home. They are designed to provide individual room heating and cooling so that you can finally solve imbalances within your home.
The systems is comprised of three components, as follows:
Interior fan coil unit: This unit is mounted on a wall inside the home (preferably an outside wall), or concealed with ductwork distribution in an attic, basement or knee wall, and provides air circulation within the area it is heating or cooling. The interior unit is connected to an exterior heat pump unit via refrigerant piping.
Exterior heat pump unit: This unit is mounted outside of the house, typically on a stand or mounted to the building to keep it above snow and ice. The heat pump unit circulates refrigerant through the interior fan coil unit to provide cooling and dehumidification during the cooling season or heat during heating season.
Refrigerant piping: The refrigerant piping connects the interior and exterior equipment providing a means to transfer energy with a series of valves and controls based on which season the system is operating in. The piping typically runs outside of the house concealed in a plastic covering system resembling a gutter that can be painted to match the house.
